International Women's Day — first celebrated 1911

First celebrated in 1911. Over a hundred years later — how far have we come?

When International Women's Day began, the preoccupation was the vote for women, the right to work, to hold public office and to end discrimination. Over a hundred years later — how far have we come? Not so far as we'd like to think. In certain countries things have even got worse. Afghanistan in the late 70s was booming, Kabul a market place for the whole of the East — a vibrant and vital city.

Each year International Women's Day has a different theme, and a long list of events, talks and reflections to go with it. internationalwomensday.com is the place to find what's on, wherever you are.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on what International Women's Day means today, and what's top of your list that needs sorting. Tell us on our Instagram.
