What Forty Years in Fashion Has Taught Me About Cotton

Why I believe in recycled cotton, and the choices we make. There is no perfect fabric, but recycled cotton is one of the most thoughtful choices we can make right now.

Why I believe in recycled cotton and the choices we make at Louche.

I've spent over forty years working with fabrics, visiting mills, developing collections and working closely with factories around the world. Long before sustainability became a marketing buzzword, I was already exploring ways to produce organic cotton in India. Those experiences taught me something I still believe today: there are rarely simple answers in fashion.

After more than forty years in fashion, I've learned that sustainability isn't about finding the perfect fibre. It's about making better choices every step of the way.

The Cotton Conversation

Organic cotton has played a vital role in reducing the impact of conventional cotton farming. It uses less water, avoids synthetic pesticides and supports healthier soil. These are all important steps forward.

But today, I'm just as excited about what we can do with the cotton that already exists.

Recycled cotton is made from pre-consumer waste – leftover fabric from factories – and post-consumer textiles that would otherwise end up in landfill. By giving these fibres a new life, we reduce the need for virgin resources, cut waste and help to close the loop.

For me, sustainability is about more than the fibre alone. It's about transparency, responsible production and creating clothes that are designed to be worn, loved and kept for years to come.

There is no perfect fabric, and no single solution. But recycled cotton is one of the most thoughtful choices we can make right now.

Why Recycled Cotton?

I've always believed that beautiful clothes should be made to last. Over the years, the way we make them has changed, and thankfully, so has our understanding of the impact fashion has on the world around us. We don't pretend to have all the answers, but we do believe in asking better questions and making more thoughtful choices every season.

Recycled cotton is one step on that journey, and I'm excited to see where it takes us.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story.
