  2. Interview with: VOTD Assistant Designer

With new brand Valley Of The Dolls launching this season, we wanted to catch up with the brand's Assistant Designer, Kristy Finnigan, to give you a behind the scenes look at the new SS15 collection.

So Kristy, tell us about yourself!

I graduated from Northumbria University last year with a degree in Fashion Design.  After A levels I knew I wanted to do something creative so stumbled upon fashion design during my Art Foundation course at Newcastle College - I loved the illustration side especially.

Joy was my first job after graduating in July, I started as a design intern as Joy in September after a few months I was made assistant!

    Is this your first range?

Yes, this was the first opportunity I was given to demonstrate my illustration skills after explaining how much I loved to draw in my interview.  I'm so lucky I was given the chance as an intern to be given an exciting project of my own!

Our favourite pieces are the Mirabella tshirts, where did you draw inspiration from when designing them?

We know JOY's customers are big fans of animals, so I set about creating some illustrations for t-shirts that were a bit more cool and quirky.  I wanted to make the animals summery and fun with a sense of humour!

Can you describe the process of designing them?

I start off with an original photograph of an animal and draw it in my own style using a black fine liner pen - (my favourite medium!) and add my own funny details. I'll then scan it in, tweak and colour it on photoshop.  The scale and placement of the artwork then needs to be figured out for the t-shirt and the pantone colours need to be chosen for digital printing.

Do you have a personal favourite?

My favourite is actually the Arwen Aqua. I love the colours and ditzy placement - it also has my favourite little puffer fish character - I drew them all a4 scale and scanned them in individually, he was definitely my favourite to draw. You can shop it here.

Is there a meaning behind the animals you chose?

I like to draw animals that convey some sort of personality or feeling - I like to find amusing or unusual photographs of them and draw them in my own style.

What are your top tips for styling these t-shirts?

They look great with denim, high waisted shorts and boyfriend jeans are just perfect.  The appeal of the t shirts is that they add interest to a casual summer wardrobe!

What else can we expect from Valley Of The Dolls SS15 collection?

Crochet dresses, contrast denim skirts and print tees and maxi dresses that bring the collection to life! Key pieces include high-waisted flared denim, a floral maxi dress and a short cheesecloth style smock dress. This is a collection made with love and inspired by the summer of love!
