The week before last we addressed the tricky issue that is occasion dressing. We each have our own personal style, but how to translate that into a gorgeous and appropriate outfit for a one-off or special event? Having shared and solved my own christening crisis, I asked if anyone else had a style conundrum that JOY could help with. Your queries came in in droves, one of our favourites was from Haley Moyse, who is going to Paris for the first time with her boyfriend and wanted a look with vintage chic appeal, aka Carey Mulligan in ‘An Education’ for her special birthday date.
"Your store has pulled me out of many a fashion panic before, just by stocking such fabulous things. But this occasion calls for something quite specific and some style advice would be much appreciated!
Age: 26 (on the day!)
Size: 5ft 4ins, size 12 - 14
Style: Vintage, with a tendency to wear too much floral.
The event: Birthday date with my boyfriend of 5 years, during our first visit to Paris, in late December. Romantic dinner by candle/Christmas light, followed by a clamber across the cobbles of Montmartre.
The challenge: Think Carey-Mulligan-Makeover in 'An Education'. But perhaps a little warmer!"
We blended old-school glamour with contemporary tailoring from a really sharp look that boasts warmth as well as style. The Christy dress from Louche is a perfect date choice, a little flamboyant for a flick in Fulham, but this is Paris; the bold rose print exudes romance and has just the right amount of flirty, femininity to have her boyfriend salivating over more than the French cuisine! A nipped in waist and full circle skirt ensure a voluptuous, vintage silhouette and a sophisticated finish perfect for the ‘fashion capital’. Teaming this girly dress with a tailored overcoat gives a fresh modern look, finish with a fur snood and a classic frame handbag; Voilá, ready for romance mon cher!
